What Happened With the Missile Strike in Poland?
First, it was of Ukrainian origin. Likely an S300 missile. However, across the alliance, there is one theme. It does not matter; this is Russian responsibility since Russia is engaged in an aggressive war against its neighbor.
Then there is the demand from Ukraine to participate in the investigation. As of this morning, Ukrainian experts are on the ground in Poland. This is important for Ukraine. It was a tragic accident as it was exercising its rights of self-defense under article 51 of the UN Charter.
A reminder of what the article says:
Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.
In statements from members of the Alliance over the last 36 hours, there is a clear affirmation of the right of Ukrainian self-defense. There is also a recognition that the risk of spillover was ever present, hence higher alert status for some of Poland’s armed forces. They are not specific as to which units. But a good guess is air defense units.
