Trust: Republicans and Speaker Johnson

If you speak to Ukrainians on social media, a pattern emerges. One that has a lot more clarity about our internal politics than what we admit. So let me quote, via screenshot, one of the Ukrainian voices I follow. Mind you, he is hardly alone.

So now that you see the sense of betrayal, it’s time to face a few facts: President Joe Biden is not perceived as the problem. It’s the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson.

I have heard the arguments that Nicky Haley would be better. Until we deal with the MAGA extremists in the House, and they still have control of the House, it will not matter who is in the White House. It’s how the political system works. It is Art 1 powers and Art 2 powers. I understand nobody teaches these basics any longer. Incidentally, Art 3 is the judiciary.

We must remember what a strong House Speaker that challenges the executive branch looks like. This is the first time we have seen this, especially regarding foreign affairs, since before World War Two. The origin of a surrender in foreign affairs to the president came from the attack on Pearl Harbor. Presidents enjoyed almost seventy years of independent action from the House. There was never a question, especially at the height of the Cold War.
