Trump a Russian Asset? Are we Dealing with a Manchurian Candidate?
Well, if you ask the heavily controlled Russian news, this is the case. You may have seen the twitter photo of President Donald Trump with Sergei Lavrov. The president sat at the Resolute Desk, and Sergey stood to his left. Both men were all smiles. But the picture is telling.
According to the reporting in the Daily Beast, it was Trump who insisted on this picture. And perhaps we would read less into it than we should if it wasn’t for the Russian media take. Mind you, Russian media is state-controlled.
Among other things, they write this:
Appearing on Sunday Evening With Vladimir Soloviev, Mikhail Gusman, first deputy director general of ITAR-TASS, Russia’s oldest and largest news agency, predicted: “Sooner or later, the Democrats will come back into power. The next term or the term after that, it doesn’t matter… I have an even more unpleasant forecast for Trump. After the White House, he will face a very unhappy period.”
“Russia’s state television uses every opportunity to demoralize the Ukrainians with talking points based on Trump’s distaste for their beleaguered country.”
The host, Vladimir Soloviev, smugly asked: “Should we get another apartment in Rostov ready?” Soloviev’s allusion was to the situation of Viktor Yanukovych, former president of Ukraine, who was forced to flee to Russia in 2014 and settled in the city of Rostov-on-Don.
This power relationship has been quite obvious since the meeting in Helsinki. These questions are not just asked by people like me, but also by those who have worked in national security.
We have known for some time that Trump cares about only one thing. This is whatever benefits him. While the Senate will not what they should, (to nobody’s surprise), the impeachment may be a signal to voters. We shall see how that goes.
For the moment, we must recognize how brazen Russian media (and by extension the Russian government) have been. They are trying to increase division in the United States, which weakens us. But they also are getting a lot of benefits from the current president.
The grievance party, that be the Republican Party, is going along with all this. As I have asked before, just how compromised is the party? This is hardly just Trump at this point. And we know this because of the level of overt corruption they are willing to engage in. Suffice it to say that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Lindsey Graham look like weak men who will do anything for the sake of power. Or is it to keep Trump from attacking them? The same goes for Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and the rest of the House Republican leadership team.
What is funny is that the grievance party was planning to impeach Hillary Clinton ten days before the 2016 election. Can you say projection?
