They Still Don’t Get It in the White House

The president is in the hospital. Though he is bored and wants to go home. None likes to be in the hospital. Let’s be honest here. But he believes it also makes him look weak. And for the president, all that matters is an image he needs to maintain. I have known toddlers with more maturity and patience. He is likely leaving against medical advice, which is easy to see if you have ever been in the medical field. But I digress. The White House Spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany has tested positive for COVID-19. She is the latest of the high profile people to test positive in this cluster. There are plenty of others far lower in the totem pole. You would expect the White House to have a muscular contact tracing operation in place.

They don’t. I guess it would be an admission that COVID is real and serious.

Nor are people who were exposed entering quarantine either. Not until they actually test positive, and as we saw with the president, likely not until after he got a positive test. In some cases, they are attending events even when waiting for results. Senator Ron Johnson attended an Oktoberfest event when still waiting for a COVID test as an example. CDC guidance says that he should have already been in quarantine.

This is the problem with many Republicans, especially those in Trump’s orbit, or spell, however, you want to characterize this. There is a constant denial of reality, especially when it could be politically inconvenient. With elections less than a month away, this matters. Most Americans are not happy with the response in general, and the toddler-like behavior from Trump and his people.

This is a classic of narcissist personalities behaving in an authoritarian way. This is why Trump would not transmit the powers of the presidency to his Vice-President, Mike Pence. Never mind Dexamethasone could be a good reason to do that, let alone COVID. Then again, Pence was exposed, may be infectious, never mind his tests, so far, have been negative. He continues with the schedule because the political calendar demands it. Trump would never forgive him if he followed the science either and everybody fears the president.

COVID is “Not Serious.”

Now, the president has denied the seriousness of the virus from the beginning. He is leaving the hospital because he seems to be bored and impatient. As I wrote above, he thinks it makes him look weak. He got not just platinum-plated medical care, but beyond I would argue. He got what at one time was called Very Important Person Medicine. This is the kind of medicine where he had access to experimental treatments, one of them on compassionate use. This particular drug is not available outside of an early clinical trial.

The president’s doctor said something that should any ear perk. He is not out of the woods. He is likely one of the most petulant patients they have had. But if he comes out of the hospital and has few complications, this is going to reinforce Trump’s view of himself. He is of superior genetic stock. And he knows more than anybody else.

He believes in eugenics, and so do a lot of white supremacists, and he is encouraging this attitude with his tweets. He wrote this earlier today, and it is dangerous:

I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!

Yes, the drugs developed to fight this virus were used with him, one is not available outside of very early clinical trials. Remdevesir is now available, but it is still considered experimental. Dexamethasone is an old steroid doing exactly what it was designed to do. From what the doctors are saying on TV, they are trying to balance the virus load, with the Remdesivir, and the Cytokine storm with the Dexamethasone. And these are usually not used in combination.

It’s not like the president is getting the same treatment people stacked on halls at Emergency Rooms were. He is not having to wait to see if he even qualifies to get treatment under triage rules. They are, of course, going to throw the kitchen sink at him. And reading between the lines from the doctors, he is still sicker than he seems from his Tweets.

He should, if he were responsible, be a tad chastened by the experience. Be aware that the cluster is growing in the White House. He should fully get behind CDC recommendations. It is so bad that his son Don Junior wants an intervention.

According to sources, Don Jr. has told friends that he tried lobbying Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Jared Kushner to convince the president that he needs to stop acting unstable. “Don Jr. has said he wants to stage an intervention, but Jared and Ivanka keep telling Trump how great he’s doing,” a source said. Don Jr. is said to be reluctant to confront his father alone. “Don said, ‘I’m not going to be the only one to tell him he’s acting crazy,’” the source added.

One area where the family seems united is over the president’s manic tweeting early Monday morning. After Trump sent out more than a dozen all-caps tweets, the Trump children told people they want Trump to stop. “They’re all worried. They’ve tried to get him to stop tweeting,” a source close to the family told me.

The Trump family’s private concern about Trump’s behavior could raise questions about his fitness for office. Trump has been prescribed drugs that medical experts say can seriously impair his cognitive function. Last night the New York Times reported that steroids, which Trump is reportedly taking, specifically dexamethasone, are known to “affect mood, causing euphoria or a general happiness.”

We know from others that this particular family is always outwardly united. We also understand that they want power.

His popularity continues to drop. Americans are mostly repulsed by this behavior and cavalier attitude. Over 206,000 Americans have died so far. We could see another 200,000 by Christmas, This is the attitude of a kleptocrat. Incidentally, I believe him, he feels better than 20 years ago. That is one side effect of the steroids. The utter mania-like tweeting is another.
