The System Eats Itself

The French Revolution ate itself, and the Terror claimed Robespierre. The Russian Revolution also ate itself, claiming the lives of many former loyalists. The system pursued people all the way to Mexico, where Leon Trotsky was killed.

Then we saw the same in Germany, with the Night of the Long Knives. It was nasty, and people who first supported Adolph Hitler were killed. It was a purge with the whole intent of the word.

Well, Russia is now at this part of the program, when it is eating itself. There is a purge underway:

These words come from the last century, but they sound as if they were written about today’s Russia.

Putin’s regime has long ceased to limit its “menu” to the opposition. It has already suppressed protests against the war, dispersed independent media, and silenced political opponents. But the appetite of the cannibal is boundless.

Today even those who were recently considered untouchable are under attack.
