We must question what is going on? First, yes, one man has the power to end the political agenda that large majorities desire. Yes, Build Back Better is very popular, including West Virginia.

However, the system does not care about the regular voter or the future. This started well before Citizens United, but that made it far worse. Donations to politicians make it very difficult for them to do what *voters wish them to do.* Part of the problem is that we have two full sorted parties. The other is that voters rarely punish politicians because there is very little choice and “the other side is crazy and threatening to my way of life.” In other words, the threat is existential.

This is why Democrats and Republicans vote for politicians that are damaging to their future. It is one of them. It is not one of the other tribe, which would never be voted for. Not with two fully sorted parties. A letter in a nationalized political environment matters more than ideas and policy.

If you believe this, then you will prefer the devil you know. Unless there is a primary challenge, there are no consequences. Politicians will continue to vote for their self-interest instead of those of the public. This is not just self-serving, but borders on the destruction of both values and the future.
