The Dam Destruction and Effects

Correction. The Fukushima accident was a level five event, with the failure of three units. The other level five was Chernobyl.

We all must first understand that Russia is accusing Ukraine of blowing up the dam. Likewise, Ukraine is pointing the finger at Russia. However, the United States will likely release intelligence pointing to Russia in the coming days. No, documents are not automatically declassified just because you think about it. However, we may get some of these documents likely this afternoon.

So what are the effects of this? In this case, I will put on my former disaster worker hat. And this is why blowing up a dam is considered a war crime, equivalent to the use of a weapon of mass destruction

Initial Effects

Regions downstream subject to flooding need to be evacuated. Numbers range from 300,000 to half a million. This isn't easy to do in peacetime. Some of the evacuations are happening while rescuers are under fire. These are more specific effects via Ygal Levin:

Volodymyr Zelenskyi commented on the current situation during the telethon:

- As a result of the Russian terrorist attack on the Kakhov Dam, 35 to 80 settlements will be flooded.

- In the region of the disaster — in Dnipropetrovsk region, in Zaporizhzhia and in Kherson region — major problems with drinking water are expected, the authorities are preparing to organize its transportation.

- It will be possible to fully assess the consequences of the tragedy no earlier than in a week — when the water recedes.

- Ukraine will apply for help in the investigation of the terrorist attack to the International Criminal Court, which has jurisdiction over such crimes, and will demand criminal responsibility for the organizers of the terrorist attack.

Now in the coming days, there are other effects. These are all bad. Some come from our modern life. This is a hazardous material incident with all the buildings, cars, and industrial sites buried under water. It will affect the future of agriculture all along the river bank and the flood zone. This pollution will affect the productivity of the black Earth of Ukraine. This is the best agricultural zone in Ukraine.
