North Korea in the Ukraine War
The United States is “concerned” by reports of North Korean soldiers fighting for Russia in Ukraine, a White House spokesperson Sean Savett said.
He added the involvement of North Korean troops in Ukraine, if true, would mark a significant increase in the North Korea-Russia defense relationship.
“Such a move would also indicate a new level of desperation for Russia as it continues to suffer significant casualties on the battlefield in its brutal war against Ukraine,” Savett said.
We now know that Ukraine is now fighting a war with three countries. Russia, Iran and North Korea. However, the latter is not just sending ammo or, in the case of Iran, drones. It is now sending troops. According to the Kyiv Independent:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Oct. 13 that Russia’s plans for supporting its full-scale invasion of Ukraine would this autumn include “the actual involvement of North Korea in the war.”
The Western diplomat told the Kyiv Independent that it’s unclear what kind of soldiers they are or what their roles were. The Kyiv Independent contacted Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry but did not receive a reply at the time of publication. Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) declined to comment.
