Final Update: The actual statement from the National Security Council of the United States.

Update the morning after, using a Russian source, because it is relevant for those who believe facts are Russophobia:

The United States holds Russia responsible for the missile incident in Poland, regardless of the results of the investigation, the White House said. “We have not seen anything that contradicts President Duda’s preliminary assessment that this explosion was most likely the result of a Ukrainian air defense missile that unfortunately landed in Poland. […] Whatever the final conclusions, it is clear that the party ultimately responsible for this tragic incident is Russia,” the publication says.

In connection with this event, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau summoned the Russian Ambassador to the Foreign Ministry and demanded immediate detailed explanations.

Now we move to the next phase of this. Poland has invoked article four of the NATO charter. This has been done a few times since the alliance started. Consultations are underway.

The Baltics in particular are behind Poland:

Poland earlier this week had said it was in talks with the Baltic states on whether to ask for consultations under NATO’s Article 4. A meeting of NATO foreign ministers is scheduled for early December in Riga, Latvia.

At a meeting on Monday in Vilnius, the three countries decided that it was not yet time to take action regarding the crisis at the Belarusian-Poland border and that the evolving situation and “behaviour” of Belarus and Russia would be monitored.
