There are reasons why the interview matters. It’s not about two people having rich people’s problems. Rather, it is about institutional racism, and how deep this still exists. Mind you, likely the Queen was not the issue here. She was alive (and serving in her military) when American troops came to prepare for D-Day. Her nation refused the request of American commanders to impose Jim Crow laws affecting American troops. This is why African American troops enjoyed their time in England. They were welcomed by their white counterparts and colonial troops from all over the Empire.
However, somebody did. It’s not good to speculate who. Just to note that xenophobia and racism are also on the upswing in the UK. It was a very good reminder of this. This is not limited to the United States. This global resurgence of the far-right is a major problem. That it has penetrated the monarchy is not surprising. That younger members of the royals may hold views that are at its heart racist is hardly breaking news. The Royals are part of the larger society.
What this crisis shows is how families can break along ideological lines. Think about your own family. I am sure you know somebody in the family that is part of this far-right resurgence. Or for that matter, somebody who has fallen down the conspiracy rabbit hole. The Royals may be extremely wealthy and privileged and living their lives in a fishbowl…
