Look Ma! No insulin!
So as of this morning…no morning jab, no Lantus shot. Apart from the fact that my skin can use the break, this matters. Last night I had a sugar low. The previous night I had a low. Saturday I had a low, a pretty dangerous one. To reverse them I had simple carbs, in the form of breakfast cereal, and I had to reach for the gummy glucose tablets, because of the fasting windows and low carb, likely my reserves in the liver were not very good, and I can live with that. All these are concentrated sources of…glucose and fructose. Believe it or not, the CVS sugar tablets have fructose, which is crazy to me knowing what I know…now. So they are a concentrated assault on the liver, but you do what you need to do in the middle of a bonafide medical emergency. It’s not like I can reach for D50, start an IV and give myself a bolus, now can I? That was standard treatment when I was a medic for pretty serious hypoglycemia, and I reversed a few using that in the field.
So what happened in three days of no fasting window and eating more carbs? The total both net and total were very close to the American Diabetes Association recommendations. The process I have been working so hard to reverse because knowledge is power started to go the other way. My waist circumference started to grow, almost imperceptibly, but enough for me to notice.
