Former President Donald Trump keeps giving speeches. He seems to get back into the White House. Most are vintage Trump, with generous servings of the Big Lie. But in a recent speech in Texas, the former president dangled pardons for all the January Six rioters. He also told his followers to prepare to demonstrate if he is indicted. This tells me he expects to be indicted, and fairly soon at that. Ergo, he is preparing the ground and does not care about the legal system, or the Constitution.

Let me quote him regarding pardons:

“If I run and if I win, we will treat those people from January 6 fairly. We will treat them fairly. And if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons because they are being treated so unfairly.”

Over 700 people have been charged over the events of January six. Some are serving time. We have a recent indictment with the Oathkeepers, that mentions insurrection. This is the most serious case, so far.

Trump is not just denouncing the election, which he has yet to admit he lost. But now he is telling his followers that he will take care of them. He is making a bold promise, but one he can keep if he returns to the White House. At the same time, he is attacking the institutions he once promised to defend. His base is in danger of becoming violent again. His calls to action are to protect him, and his authoritarian project.

Mind you, the statement is circulating in far right-wing media, such as GAB. According to the same report from the New York Times:

Late Sunday, Mr. Trump issued a statement denouncing a bipartisan effort to rewrite the Electoral Count Act of 1887, a century-old law that the former president and his allies misinterpreted in their failed effort to persuade his vice president, Mike Pence, to throw out legitimate election results. The effort to change the law is aimed at…
