It was not a bad tank. Never said it was.
It also depended on the fuel. Diesel based engines did not do that. Also not every tank crew died. If anything, even compared to any Russian tank, Sherman’s are roomy and have multiple ways to dismount. Russian tanks are cramped and are harder to dismount. To this day Russian tanks have that issue.
However, the philosophy behind the M1A1 insofar as crew survival comes, is a direct consequence of General Abrams experience with the Sherman. He lost way too many crews. It’s also our lower tolerance to casualties. So the M1 is a rather survivable tank.
