Nutrient-Rich Lunch

“You are lazy.”

“Fell off the wagon…”

“You lack discipline…”

“You are fat and deserve scorn.”

If you have been around people with weight issues you have heard these. They are not necessarily told by others, trying to shame overweight and obese people into losing weight. People play this music in their head, and in some ways, it sets people for a bad relationship with food.

My all-time favorite is… “You need a change in attitude.”

So let me tell you something about weight loss. I know that many people believe it is calories and activity-related. If you eat too many calories you will gain weight. If you eat a caloric deficit, you will lose weight. It makes sense, but it is not that simple.

There are multiple factors that get in the way, and we need to find exactly how they work because we are in the midst of an obesity epidemic. One that did not come from people just sitting down eating ice cream and watching TV. In fact, as a young medic, I had a first-row seat to how it developed in Mexico. And yes, it is directly related to the entry into the country of places like Burger King and McDonald's, as well as the increasing prevalence of…you guessed it, frozen foods and highly processed foods.
