Over the last few months, we have been doing Dungeons and Dragons games over zoom. It is getting better, in some ways. After all, not being in person means that there are things we all miss, social cues mostly. We have gone from level one characters, which are new babes in this world, to level ten characters. This means we are increasingly encountering the true monsters of the universe.

This is a nice break from the everyday pressures of work, my four walls, and at times boredom.

My husband created the world, and we are not doing any of the pre-packaged adventures or universes from Wizards of the Coast. Instead of delving into the mythos they created, we are in somebody else’s playground. This means we only need the basic books that allow you to play the game: These are the Monsters Compendium, the Players Handbook, and for the Game Master, the Game Masters Compendium. In the recent past, we bought a supplemental monsters book from another publisher. It just adds spice to the game.

However, if you want to play a game, there are magnificent worlds that go back a long time. There are some that exist in the secondary market, and some work could be brought back for your players in fifth edition. It takes work to bring a first edition world to the fifth, but it can be done. One that comes to mind is Greyhawk. There are others. At present, the…
