Let’s be clear. What we are experiencing with the Donald Trump Administration is not normal. The administration announced that John Brennan would be stripped of his security clearance. The rest that are under threat are as follows:
- James R. Clapper Jr., former director of national intelligence
- James B. Comey, former FBI director (He lost it already)
- Michael V. Hayden, former director of the National Security Agency and former CIA director
- Andrew G. McCabe, former deputy FBI director (He did when he was fired)
- Bruce G. Ohr, former associate deputy attorney general (His wife worked for Fusion GPS, the company the Steele Dossier. It was first commissioned by a conservative outfit)
- Lisa Page, former FBI attorney
- Peter Strzok, former FBI agent
- Susan E. Rice, former national security adviser
- Sally Q. Yates, former deputy attorney general
This list has one thing in common. All these people are critics of the President of the United States. The president seeks to do two things. One is to punish them-in an unprecedented way. Most of these people also served full careers in the civil and military service. This is an attack on the fictional deep state.
This is also a way to punish critics. It is what dictators do. If this president could do it, they would be sent to a dark hole where none of us would hear from them ever again. They would be disappeared. This is what dictators do. There are still limits to how far this president can go. But those limits are fraying, fast.
Richard Nixon was a paranoid man who kept an enemies list. Donald Trump is doing the same.
However, the president is also trying to divert and distract from the Paul Manafort trial that just went to the jury. There was no defense mounted. The closing arguments relied on his case was political. Likely we will see a conviction. We may see a pardon soon after.
Omarosa Manigault Newman Is about to release a scathing book on the president. The book is titled *Unhinged,* and it is a tell-all. Whether she can be believed, or not, is a good question. However, the West Wing is concerned. Press Secretary Sara Sanders cannot guarantee that there is no tape of the president using the N word. This should trouble the country, but his base will care not if this emerges. Why? After so many of these over two years, his defenders, his loyalists, will defend.
We are in the midst of a crisis. It is multifaceted. It is constitutional since this president keeps testing limits. It is also a crisis of the presidency. This president is smearing the office in unprecedented ways. Lastly, we may be in the midst of an ongoing foreign attack, where the president is doing his level best to divide, and weaken, the country.
Suffice to say, a democratic leader does not keep an enemies list. A democratic leader does not punish political enemies. A dictator does.
Trump admires leaders who run authoritarian systems, and hates traditional democratic allies. Looking at it from this lens, we are facing the worst crisis in modern American history. Incidentally, this includes the Nixon presidency. He was dangerous, but Trump makes Watergate look like a nothing-burger. Nixon also put his country ahead of himself. Everything is about Trump.
