Different Paths and Roads Not Taken
When Boris Nemtsov was killed near the Kremlin in 2014 after he criticized the invasion of Crimea, this road was not taken. There are many theories of why or who ordered the killing. Though those directly responsible, we are told, were arrested and received long sentences. One blew himself up in Sochi before he could be arrested.
He opposed the regime and was one of the best-known critics of Vladimir Putin. This is before the Navalny phenomenon. His death, as well as the attempted murder of Alexei Navalny, and subsequent prison term, as well as the deaths of others, are seen as a sign of increasing repression.
Remember, Vladimir Putin, rebuilt the vertical of power that existed in the Soviet period. That he enriched himself in the process is also true. The 27th was the anniversary of the Nemtsov murder. Usually, some people leave flowers by the monument near the Kremlin. This year people were arrested, but most significantly, this memorial practice has spread to other cities in Russia.
