Dereliction of Duty

The President of the United States is failing in the fulfillment of his oath, He is not protecting the country. He is failing, and the Republican Party remains silent. By their silence, they consent.

The indictment of thirteen Russians who interfered in the 2016 elections is stunning. They detail what is in effect a cybernetic Pearl Harbor on the United States. Donald Trump does not care. The only thing this man cares is about himself, and how these findings could make his election illegitimate.

Let’s make a few things clear. Once the election was certified, he was the legitimately elected President of the United States. These words might be problematic for his critics in the Democratic Party, but they are exactly that. He is the legitimately elected President of the United States. We have no precedent for all that happened over the last two years though.

Trump does not care that the Russians launched a cyber attack on the United States, one that was successful beyond the wildest dreams. There are reasons why some might question his victory. Those are the same exact people who do not yet understand why Trump won.

Normal presidents do not react like Trump.

Any other president would have called for his national security apparatus to defend the country against further attack. Instead, Trump is still making this about himself. Worse, he enlisted seventeen dead teenagers in his quest to discredit the FBI.

I hate magnifying the Tweets from the President, but this one deserve magnification:

Very sad that the FBI missed all of the many signals sent out by the Florida school shooter. This is not acceptable. They are spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign — there is no collusion. Get back to the basics and make us all proud!

It betrays a few things. The first is that the President of the United States continues his attacks on institutions. This is the instinct of an authoritarian leader, not one who believes in Democratic institutions. The second, and your mileage will vary. He either does not understand the size of the FBI (35,000), or he does not care. The people working for Mueller had nothing to do with the Miami Field Office.

Or he does not care.

There is a third possibility. One that makes Americans very uncomfortable. The Kremlin has something on this man. He is nothing less than a Manchurian candidate working for a foreign power. Or equally troubling, he is using the White House to enrich himself.

Did the Russians Influence the Election?

Full disclosure: I grew up in Mexico. When I was growing up it was an open secret that the United States influenced the results of Mexican elections. Due to the Kennedy papers we know, to no surprise, how expansive it was.

Three Mexican presidents worked for the CIA. Yes, it was that blunt. The big reveal from the Kennedy papers caused not even a small stir.

So holding two thoughts in my mind is hardly difficult. How successful was the Russian operation in 2016? Did the Russians flip the elections? If you are looking for direct evidence, as in actual vote rigging, don’t hold your breath. For the most part those ballots were destroyed, and that is the kind of evidence you need for that evidence.

We know that the Russians targeted the voting databases of 21 states. This makes some sense, since each state has different layers of security and we essentially hold 51 state elections that coalesce into one large national election. This election is not even for President but the electoral college. The last step is certification in the Senate.

Why look at the databases? For starters, all databases have your party affiliation, Therefore, anybody who wants to target people by party, uses that database. Incidentally all political parties get that information. This is not that unusual. What is out of bounds is that a foreign actor tried, and might have succeeded, in obtaining it. This is why you get targeted adds in the mail every election.

Did the Russians change physical votes? All evidence says they did not. Nor could we really test it since ballots were destroyed a while ago. However, did they change minds? That is far harder to assess. The government of course is saying they did not. Why? Partly they would have to take far more overt action than they have so far. And it would make the election of Donald J. Trump less legitimate in the mind of many voters. The President is deeply worried about that. Why he attacks the Russia probe all the time.

It is high time for Trump to stop caring if the claims made by the prosecutor take away from his legitimacy. That ship sailed a while ago. His victory though the Electoral college will raise questions among historians. This is not unlike the 1876 and 2000 elections, and for the same reason. However, I do suspect Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and George W. Bush would have acted to punish a bad actor that, at the very least, tried to influence the election. This president has refused to impose sanctions and has yet to say anything critical of Vladimir Putin.

We need a commander in chief that cares about the national security of the United States, and election integrity. The president, and his acolytes, state that they are defending themselves from a fake news media (another attack on institutions), and an incapable FBI. He is the worst president in the history of the United States. This is no longer a debate for any clear thinking American.

He is not just bad. He could not lead hungry men to a banquet. At a time we need a leader, we have a narcissist coward in power, One that also has authoritarian instincts. He is also failing to fulfill his oath.
