Departments with four officers, one Lt and a police Chief are just nuts. I just described the organization of the Uvalde school police department. There are a lot like that. Since this is an evergreen story…a local issue. The city of San Marcos has a SWAT team…they really don’t need one. And the cost of vehicles, training alone could be redirected to other city services.

The SWAT team is where they can play warrior fantasies to the hilt.

When we were doing local news our local school police got an MRAP from the feds. Why? They said when confronted they could use it to rescue kids after an earthquake. After the laughter died, they were forced to return it.

These are the kinds of issues that point to this warrior ethos.

Most cops are likely not a problem…but they will not tell us about the problem children either, because it will, at the least, end backup when they need it.

And we have seen gangs in blue, Rampart scandal is well known. Increased training will solve some of this, but we need to end the culture of impunity that allows for things like the Rampart scandal to fester for decades. As a culture we must also reward police officers who would issue a ticket to another officer. If you are just in the probationary period that will end your career.

Think about that one for a second.

We know of that as a real life problem.

Oh and a previous police chief blatantly lied to my city council.
