This is an adventure meant for first to third-level characters. This is a one-off adventure that can be played as a one-time game, or serve as an adventure seed in an ongoing campaign. The background is generic for that reason. It is supposed to be done in one game session.

Background

Map of the region, I used Inkarnate

You have heard rumors about this place that you now come to. This hamlet, Garos, is small, mostly decrepit, and on the edge of the Swamp of the Dark One. It is as if the swamp is trying hard to subsume the small hamlet and whatever light remains. Any magic attuned character can feel the tendrils of dark magic emanating from the swamp. They can also feel a barrier of sorts, of light magic. It’s trying to hold back the darkness.

The hamlet looks in bad repair, with a couple of narrow streets. The north has fiends for food to be grown. And on the other side of the dirt road lies an in with the lights on. South of it there is a second in, doors closed, roof in shambles, and a wall starting to crumble. There are ruins of what was a larger settlement all over. This town, if you wish to call it that much is by the river Skull, named such because the headwaters can look like one in the right conditions. Then you can see the ruins of a temple. Likely a local religion. There is an aura of dark magic around it. And the locals are curious about the party. It’s not like too many people come to this place.

Your party heard rumors of both treasure and mysteries. This is why you are here. Entering this town, where people spy on you from their homes.

Rumors say that at one point it was on the crossroads of an ancient empire. Though memories of that era are more like rumors than fact. They are stories in the mist of time. However, this place has that aura of magic, as if a battle is still ongoing. As you look around there is an inn, on the other side of the road, and a second that is falling apart.. There are a few homes, more like hovels, and a saw mill by the river. However, it is idle, but looks in good repair. There are clues in the ruins near the Inn that there was a battle. The aura of magic involves both chaotic and good, from the dark age and the light.

Some of the markings in the ruins point to a place of worship. There is an ancient script that could be understood with the proper skills. DC…
