An American Constitutional Crisis and Other Stories

By now, I am sure you have heard that the war with Iran will resume. In fact, it restarted yesterday. So before I deal with that, I want to delve into a crisis we have in the United States, which is very much part of this. And that is two-fold. The first is that both the House and the Senate passed resolutions stating that the president lacked the authority to do so. And we are well beyond the War Powers Act. So this act by President Donald Trump now requires congressional authorization. In other words, we require a declaration of war and a reminder that we have not had one of those since 1941.

A reminder, the War Powers Act was a consequence of the Vietnam War, where a few presidents took us to war without a declaration of war. So now here we are, again, with a president who has decided to go to war because of the Epstein Files, his narcissism, whatever, fact is he has no constitutional authority to do this.

And the constitutional crisis is not just with Iran and that war. It is now well within our shores. And I have been debating how to deal with this near-Soviet-like event. This is the fate of Senator Mitch McConnell. As you may know by now, he was found unconscious, actually in CPR status, at home in Washington, D.C.
