A Blizzard in San Diego

Blizzard is not a word you think about in San Diego, but that’s precisely what we had over the weekend. Once those dangerous conditions were over, we decided to drive to Julian with Dexter. It was a way to introduce the dog to snow. For the record, he is not a fan.

However, things became a tad more serious, because this blizzard, the first in the county’s history, led to road closures leading to the mountain town of Julian. They were open only to residents, and since we carry our press credentials, press.

Indeed we were able to proceed into this winter wonderland that usually has a lot of traffic. People park along the road and sled down hills. Today it was very eerie, reminding us of closures during wildfires, except there were snow plows, the occasional police car, and a few people playing along the snow. It was pristine, with good light, though.

The first thing we had to do was put chains on the jeep. Yes, it has all-terrain tires, but as we drove up the mountain, we found plenty of black ice. The second thing we found is that lake Cuyamaca is not as low as it was, but it’s still low.

Incidentally, for those of you from snow country, you are familiar with winter tires. When we finally reached Julian it was 30…
