This year we should be at home, within our bubble. We should do this to make sure that we flatten the curve. It’s the patriotic thing to do. I know, this feels odd. We all have traditions. Forays it us to travel on Saturday to a restaurant near Los Angeles. We meet with family on a day we all can. My husband is a postal worker, so he usually has the day off on a Wendesday…not this year.

My sister has the week off like every year, and they go to a time share. My cousin lives in Los Angeles. So meeting on a Saturday is our tradition. This year we are staying at home. I am making brisket tonight, with potatoes, and carrots. I got some gluten free chocolate muffins, and will make a corn poblano chowder. …

For one brief second, President Donald Trump recognized reality. Joe Biden won, and the GSA finally released the funds. We are now in the transition to the next administration even as the president went back to denial and conspiracy. After ll, this is where the president thrives, in an alternate reality that is fantasy.

That moment of reality hit the QAnon fans like a thunderbolt from heaven The cult leader, the president, is going away as the new president will take the oath on January 20th. There was silence for some time in the depths of the Far Right media sphere, where the fans of QAnon and other alternate realities congregate. This formal start to the transition was a shock to the system. There were questions. Did he concede? Did he quit?. Donald Trump has never been that much of an actual fighter, and this fight has presented no evidence in the courts. Parker, GAB, and Free Republic posts are not evidence. They are hearsay Free clue, chances are that Trump will go back to gadfly on the edge of political reality, still feared by the Republican Party, which still acts as if he can get this thing done. Or at least some are, like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Senator Marco Rubio. Others have bowed their head to reality for them we are thankful, for the future should include reunifying the nation. …

For students of Latin American history, or for that matter immigrants from Latin-America, what President Donald Trump is attempting is awfully familiar. Sources have told CNN, among others, that this is coming from a place of revenge. He wants to do to Democrats what they did to him, never recognize his election in 2016. It does not matter that Democrats did, and we had a peaceful transfer of power.

These facts do not matter, because for Trump and his allies what happened next never allowed them to have legitimacy. …

Americans rejected Donald Trump in the elections, but not Trumpism. Donald Trump was a poor tactician and strategist when it comes to imposing fascism, which is what we are facing. Our institutions have barely held, under an unrelenting attack that I predict will not be over once the president leaves stage left. . There is no guarantee that with a polished fascist they will hold.

There are many Americans who are still ready for the message of a past that was glorious. They are willing to accept the promises of a great day to come, within the constraints of fascist ideology. They want that nation that returns us to a caste system, and perhaps ethnic cleansing. …

Trumpism is not just a political movement, with populist tendencies. It is also a cult, with some of the chief characteristics of one. This is a cult with unquestioning of the leader, and increasingly us v them way of looking at the world. There is orthodoxy in the belief system and it is increasingly isolating its members, even as the administration comes to an end. Let's be clear about cults. They rely on a leader, a strong man if you will, who gives them a sense of their future, their present, and their past. We have understood this since at least the Second World War, and the writing of a classic, The True Believer by Eric Hoffer. We are dealing with true believers in our midst, as well as a cynical leader who knows the future of the movement depends on the past. …

One of the conspiracy theories circulating in right-wing media, as well as the internet far-right swamps, is that COVID is not real. Or if it’s not as serious as it actually is. In reality, it is a tool of control for the deep state and as soon as the election was over, it would go away. We can now leave the masks at home, woohoo! Really, people deep in the conspiracy world believe this. The fact that the media seems unable to chew gum and walk at the same time does not help. Or that since the election we have had intense media coverage of the election returns. …

Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States. Kamala Harris will be the first woman Vice-President of color. This is a historic moment. While the election was not the utter rejection of Trumpism we expected based on polling company information. There are reasons for that, which need fixing, or we need to move away from Gallup, et al. However, this is still a historic moment. Even if the country is still utterly divided, and we expect to see more division from President Donald Trump. The next few weeks will still be dangerous.

It’s time to look to The future and healing of a deeply hurt nation. We are hurting and need a new beginning of hope. …

President Donald Trump has always been a winner. Only losers can lose. This is why he will have a hell of a time conceding the election. He is also a man who not only loves conspiracies but has come with a few of his own. This is why his statements that the presidency is getting stolen from him should surprise no-one. The grievances that the vote count is somehow fraud is not shocking. That he is activating the conspiracy-minded base, who are protesting (with weapons) is not shocking.

Some of us expected this. Michael Cohen warned the Congress that this was coming. His niece Mary has explained the psychology at play. Donald Trump is not capable of admitting defeat because he is not a loser. …

We are all familiar with this slur the right uses. We can go blue in the face explaining why this is wrong. However, this is not about political science. This is about social order. First, let me go back to the Russian Revolution and the American Revolution. They are very different beasts. If you add the French Revolution this will make sense.

The American Revolution was a civil war, that did not change the social order. Yes, it has some changes in the sense that the founding documents potentially opened the way to equality. However, the compromises over slavery were a poison pill that would lead to a second civil war. …

There are several major takeaways from this election. The first is the obvious one. Like other folks, I relied on local and state polls. They were better in 2016, but not by much. The polling errors are even worse this year. Whether this is people on purpose lying to pollsters, or their methods don’t work. This means that polling companies are no longer capturing voting preferences. They did much better in the midterms. Why I was more trusting of them. The national poll balance usually means that the person ahead will have an easier time. This year…we are still waiting.

This means that in 2024 I will not consume polls for breakfast. I don’t care if they are the Sienna polls, or Gallup, or for that matter Rasmussen. I don’t think we can trust the polls. At one point in our history, we had no polls. We are back to that. …
